Take a Break From the Holiday Bustle

Enjoy some free Christmas fun Saturday, Dec. 8, 1 to 3 pm at the Shaughnessy Street Pop-up Park.

Held in the 2600-block of Shaughnessy Street, a pop-up event will feature entertainment, refreshments, hands-on activities and a chance to mingle with fellow residents and Port Coquitlam’s new City Council.

Activities will include:

  • Free cocoa and cookies sponsored by the Port Coquitlam Business Improvement Association,
  • Live holiday entertainment,
  • Holiday ornament and gingerbread decorating,
  • Selfies with a Port Coquitlam photo frame and holiday backdrop, and
  • Door prizes.

Area businesses are invited to participate by offering free prizes, gift baskets, coupons and flyers. Businesses interested in participating or supporting the event can email araujom@portcoquitlam.ca.

Created this summer in an empty downtown lot, the pop-up park will be decked with holiday decor and include four live trees – one to be trimmed by event-goers and three decorated by local Girl Guides for the PoCo Heritage Christmas Tree Festival. The eighth annual festival runs until Jan. 4 and raises funds for heritage programs. For information, visit pocoheritage.org/christmas-festival.

Shaughnessy Pop-Up Park continues to be a popular downtown feature since it was opened in July. The space is decorated by a colourful 65-foot-long mural by Vancouver-area artist Laura Bifano depicting the mountain views from Port Coquitlam, and includes seating, lights, planters and a community stage.

Property owner InsureLine has continued to loan the space to the city for free.

Community groups and organizations interested in booking the space for performances and events are encouraged to apply with a proposal. The activities must add to the public’s enjoyment of the space, and cannot be a marketing, sales or fundraising event.
